To Be

The list was long as I started my day.

The “to do’s” seemed to never end,

As the overwhelming fear captured my thoughts,

I pondered just where to begin.

He interrupted my thoughts with His still small voice,

“My son, why do you worry so?”

My reply, came quickly as I poured out my heart,

“Lord, so much to do, so many places to go.”

“Let’s look at your list, for I’m sure I can help.”

And then quickly he said, “I see.”

“Here is your problem and it’s easy to fix,

It’s all ‘to do’s’, not a single ‘to be’.”

“What do you mean?” I asked him with wonder,

He responded with patience and grace,

“Start your day with a ‘to be’ list,

And the ‘to do’s’ will fall into place.”

Be loving, be kind, be tender hearted.

Be forgiving, be filled and be blessed.

Be faithful in starting your day with me

Be sure I will give you rest.

Believe in everything I have told you,

And simply begin with me,

It’s easy to get caught up with things to do,

But first, be what I called you to be.
