Friends

Friends that are close are so hard to find
And harder still to develop o’er time,
But that’s what it takes if you want to get close
To give and to take and make friends the most.

No one is perfect, but wouldn’t it be grand
If we could just find maybe one who could stand
The test we give daily to everyone it seems
But no one could pass it even in our dreams.

Our expectations are suspect at best
If we really think we could pass our own test
And muster up the courage enough to admit
That we too fall short, when it comes right down to it.

A true friend is one who is always there
Who will overlook trouble and misery we share
That is brought about daily by the old man called pride
Who seems to entangle while along for the ride.

But the Word speaks so clearly about this you well know
Lay down your pride and humbly stoop low
And ask for forgiveness if necessary each day
And shake off the things that get in the way.

Well we all know this for we’ve heard it enough
But somehow we’re caught and getting loose is so tough
That we finally do throw up our hands and just say,
“It was his fault not mine.” He owes me today!”

But the closest of friends is Jesus our brother
He showed us just how to act with each other
To love is to give and to give of our best
Even when we don’t feel like it, is the real test.

So how can you find a true friend you can trust
By being one so thoroughly yourself is a must.
And the more that you go just one extra mile,
It will start to happen, in such a short while.

The very next time you need a close friend
Be one first as it happens again.
The more friends you make, the happier you’ll be
The proofs in the making, not waiting you see.
