Her step is a lot slower now
\nNothing like it used to be,
\nOur lovely golden Penny,
\nIs the dog for us you see.<\/p>\n
She was a little puppy
\nWhen she first caught our eye.
\nWe told our son to pick the one
\nThat he wanted us to buy.<\/p>\n
Her blood-line was the best
\nOf retrievers of her day,
\nBut that really didn\u2019t matter,
\nWhen it came time to pay.<\/p>\n
For we came to get a puppy
\nAnd a puppy we did get.
\nI think we took her hunting once,
\nAnd boy did she get wet.<\/p>\n
She used to jump upon my back
\nIf I lay upon the floor
\nAnd put her head right next to mine
\nAnd wait for me to snore.<\/p>\n
I remember the time I saw her jump,
\nAnd pull an apple down,
\nShe always ate it to the core,
\nBut never from the ground.<\/p>\n
She barked at everything that moved,
\nBut never would she bite,
\nHer touch was very gentle,
\nAnd I\u2019ve never seen her fight.<\/p>\n
She found a baby rabbit once
\nWhen she went out to play,
\nShe gently placed it in her mouth
\nAnd mothered it all day.<\/p>\n
She never tried to harm it,
\nBut carried it around,
\nAnd when she looked for just the spot,
\nShe gently laid it down.<\/p>\n
She barked until we heard her,
\nAnd out we went to see,
\nThe baby rabbit sitting there
\nAnd standing guard was she.<\/p>\n
She loved to run and run she could,
\nIt didn\u2019t matter where,
\nShe\u2019d run and then she would turn around,
\nTo see if I was there.<\/p>\n
But now her steps are slower,
\nShe tires out very soon.
\nAnd when she lays down for the night
\nHer groans can fill the room.<\/p>\n
Oh to have just one more chance
\nTo watch her run around
\nTo see if I\u2019m not far behind
\nA chasing cross the ground.<\/p>\n
Is it time to let her go the way
\nThat others do?
\nWe\u2019ll miss her dearly that\u2019s for sure
\nWe\u2019re certain you would too.<\/p>\n
We just finished saying goodbye
\nTo our all time favorite one,
\nIf heaven exist for dogs like her,
\nI am sure she is having fun.*<\/p>\n
